What Does "Carbon Neutral" Mean?

The 2 word phrase "Carbon neutral" is used to describe organisations, activities, goods or services which inhibit as much carbon emission as they produce. The carbon neutral theory is working for today and is one way to ensure a healthy environment for our children along with the generations that will come after them. Becoming carbon neutral is not as difficult as you may think and it certainly is good for Mother Earth. It's an inexpensive method of taking responsibility for the greenhouse gases that we create.

Offsets?

The theory goes that by effectively offsetting the greenhouse gas production of an activity or an event then that event can be described as being "carbon neutral".

Throughout its day-to-day running a company produces carbon dioxide. If you or your employees are regular fliers then your CO2 production is off the scale. Quantifying this amount gives us your carbon footprint. If you invest in schemes which effectively absorb carbon dioxide from the environment then you are reducing your carbon footprint.

In conclusion we can say that reductions in emissions do come about by using carbon offsets as long as the offset scheme is investigated thoroughly as to the nature of their operation. There is no doubt that action must be taken immediately in order to stabilize levels of greenhouse gas in our atmosphere.
